Florida Library Association's One Book One State

Good Afternoon Colleagues,

 

My name is Gene Coppola and I am the Chairman of the Leadership Development Committee of FLA.

 

In late 2011, Florida Library Association President Gloria Colvin announced the selection of Our Iceberg is Melting: Changing and Succeeding under Any Conditions by John P. Kotter as the inaugural One Book, One State”program for 2012.  This is one of the Committee initiatives to create statewide "Leadership Legacy" programs.

 

This particular program provides a way “to create a network of activities and conversations about leadership throughout the state,” in the words

The FLA Continuing Education committee invites proposals for posters to be exhibited during the FLA Annual Conference in Orlando, FL. To learn more about the conference, please go to the conference page: http://www.flalib.org/conference_2012.php.

We encourage proposals for posters related to the program theme "Florida Libraries- Vibrant and Vital” chosen by current FLA president Gloria Colvin.

Florida Library Day, February 1, 2012

Florida Library Day is fast approaching!  Our opportunity to come together to advocate for our libraries will be held February 1st. If you have never participated in Library Days, now is your chance!  It is a great time to network with others from around the state, spend quality time with folks from your own library, see the legislature in action and get lots of exercise trekking up and down the hills of Tallahassee and halls of government.

PBCLA Inaugural FLA Registration Scholarship Official Rules

PBCLA Scholarship for FLA Annual Conference Details

One entry per PBCLA member. PBCLA board members excluded. Participants must be a current PBCLA member at the time of the drawing. We will be raffling 4 total scholarships – 2 of these to a regular member, 1 to a student member, and 1 to a first time FLA Conference attendee. If there are no student members, or first time attendees present, the remaining scholarships will go to regular members.

PBCLA Winter Quarterly Meeting Update

We are pleased to announce the date and location of our Winter Quarterly Meeting! The date is January 19th, 2012 and the event will be held at Palm Beach State College’s Lake Worth campus from 2-5pm. Our topic is The iPatron: Using Technology to Stay Connected to Your Patrons. This will be a panel presentation followed by a hands on technology petting zoo. If you are interested in demonstrating an emerging technology please contact us. There will also be a member’s only drawing where 4 winners will have their FLA 2012 Conference registration paid for!

ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program

At its November 4 meeting, FLA’s Executive Board approved the donation of $250 to ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship Program.

 

FLA members are encouraged to contribute personally to the Spectrum initiative as well as to FLA’s own scholarship program. FLA offers three graduate and two undergraduate scholarships each year to those attending Florida schools.

 

The American Library Association is continuing its efforts to raise more than a million dollars for the Spectrum Scholarship Program which will support master's-level scholarships, provide two $25,000 doctoral scholarships, and increase the

Community Leaders Invited to Focus Group on LSTA Long Range Plan

We invite you or your representative to participate in a focus group about the best way to meet the information and learning needs of Florida residents and the government and community agencies that serve them. 

 

The Florida Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services receives federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds to be used to help Florida libraries meet the information and learning needs of the residents of Florida.

Osceola County Schedules Meetings for Library Privatization Discussion

The Osceola County Board of County Commissioner’s is considering privatizing Osceola County Public Library to Library Systems and Services LLC (LSSI), a for profit library management company based in Maryland.  Several public meetings have been scheduled on this issue and it has been suggested that the Commission will likely take up the proposed LSSI contract on November 7 or 14.
